A companion channel for my Tom's Big Spiders blog, this channel is devoted to arachnoculture and the husbandry of tarantulas. (tomsbigspiders.wordpress.com/)
After keeping a G. porteri for over 16 years, I decided that I wanted to add another T to my collections. Little did I know that this would begin a new obsession. With over 100 specimens and 75+ species, I'm now hopelessly addicted to the hobby.
I'm NOT an expert, and I'm currently still learning about keeping these fascinating creatures. In fact, there are so many species, that I suspect I'll still be learning years from now. A teacher by trade, I enjoy passing along what I've learned and helping other in their successful pursuit of this hobby. I enjoy hearing from folks, whether through comments or email.

Some Terrestrial Tarantulas That Will Burrow
Переглядів 4,1 тис.14 днів тому
For years, we were told that "terrestrial" tarantulas only require a few inches of substrate and hide to be happy. However, the longer I've kept, the more species I've discovered that seem to like to dig almost as much as fossorials even as adults. In this episode, I'll show off some of the terrestrial species that I keep that do a good deal of burrowing. Tom's Big Spiders Website: tomsbigspide...
A RAINBOW OF SPIDERS Part 2 - Colorful Spiders
Переглядів 15 тис.Місяць тому
In 2019, I put together a video featuring some of my more colorful tarantula species in hopes of giving hobbyists a way to prove to their friends and families that tarantulas COULD, indeed, be beautiful. Now, five years later, I've finally put together the sequel, and this time around, I've included other species of spiders as well. To be clear, this is NOT a "Top 10" list of the prettiest spid...

Whats the difference with Grammostola porteri?
Damn, not a single avic?!? 😮😮😂
Hey Tom!!! I have a salmon pink birdeater and a T. Stirmi, I definitely want the blondi down the line, would you say that the blondi is better off in a bin setup? For humidity reasons mainly.
Personally, I don’t plan on handling any of my tarantulas so I’m a lot more scared of them kicking hairs in my eyes than I am of a bite. Therefore I Like old world tarantulas better
I would love if you could make a list of the least expensive tarantula. Please!!!
Why put them in those totes when can’t even see them? Seems pointless.
Stirmis are the real monsters of the Genus.
I prefer purple. Red is my favorite color but not enough bright red tarantulas out there but since purple is so rare I would take this. Hopefully I find one of these beauties some day
Tom, how dare you prioritize your health and comfort by wearing gloves instead of displaying some unnecessary macho behavior that results in you being miserable all day? I pay good money to see ... oh, wait... this is free. In that case, I really appreciate all the information you put out and your love of these animals really shows. Thank you for making these videos for us viewers. Your spiders are really beautiful.
Nice video. I just got my first scorpion, an emperor. Love the detail you provide on caring for these species. The size of these beasts is quite impressive. Keep putting out these videos, it is enjoyable to learn about the care of such creatures.
I have a question if you could help me out. I have a Gammastola pulchra juvenile. This lil critter climbs all over the place. Climbing the walls, and on the decor. I changed the substraight thinking it was too damp only to find the same behavior. Appetite seems to be good, and always fresh water. Any thoughts. Thank you happy 4th.
Sorry Tom it’s a grammostola pulchra. Thanks Jim
Great video, you have some gorgeous ladies! It's funny, photos/videos of these guys never seem to properly convey just how big they are (footage in general, not just yours!). I saw my first one in real life at the Philly zoo a few months ago, a ~9-10" T stirmi, and was really shocked and awed by just how huge it was! It was like, "OH, that spider IS seriously massive". Makes me think that people who write them off as "just a big brown spider" haven't ever seen one in person, because it was seriously breathtaking to behold! How could anyone think "it's just..." about something so big???
Thanks for your videos Tom. I really want a T apophysis but I'm still need to upgrade my skills on the other I 'd like to ask for a care and husbandry video on Cyriopagopus sp hati hati it's a pretty common so id' like to hear your thoought on this species Thanks in advanced
I've only been a keeper for almost two years. I started with 3 new world ts. A b,Emilia and a b, bohemi, then a got an anthescuria geniculata. All slings. Then i got my first old world t. A p Metallica after 6 months. They are all doing very well, eating and moulting and growing well. As a former arachnophobia sufferer, your channel has been an inspiration and showed me how beautiful they all are. Thank you for all your valuable information. Keep up the great work.

Do most of them burrow as slings?
Shes a beauty and so calm and another prove that each spider has its own personality. I saw an OBT as docile as a poppy crawling on its owners hand to get rehoused and i saw a Brachypelma hamorii as defensive as an OBT instantly giving a thread posture and attacking the tweezers while being feed. I hope i will get a Blondi or Stirmi some day :)
Is the males grow faster than the females?
Hey tom, I just got 2" inch Blondi last year. Do they get less humidity dependent as they get bigger? its about 4" inch now and I'm kinda stressing putting it in a bigger enclosure since I'm afraid the enclosure would get mold because of the humidity
Thank you Tom, really appreciate the information. I only recently got my very first sling, a Grammostola Pulchra and I think she's in pre-molt stage. She had a dark circular spot when I first got her but now her entire abdomen is really dark, if not black. She ate twice since I got her, but now she won't take food and she didn't really move around a lot when I got her but now she's really still. I know this can be typical G Pulchra behavior but still. I think she is in pre-molt but not entirely sure. I've done a TON of research but still learning a lot.
These enclosures are amazing. The name sounds like a Magic the Gathering card. Picked up two because of how well you speak of them and I now have my C. cyaneopubescens and Mastigoproctus tohono in them. They are great but my only complaint is the one with my GBB is oddly cloudy compared to the other so I don't get to see her as clearly. The not exploding is a lifesaver too!
Are H. Gigas slings hard to care for? Mine passed a few days ago & I'm SO sad because I was so excited to have them in my collection.
I couldn’t agree more! The point is to keep our spiders healthy, comfortable, and “happy”. If that means they hide more, so what? ❤
Is this a female? I thought only males had such vibrant colors.
I just purchased a female Idiothele mira. I am getting her on Tuesday. Her name is Padme'. I am so excited to get her. I purchased her on Morph Market from Ella's Spiders. I wouldnt have dreamed that I would have Old Worlds i now have three and they are great. Anyways, thanks so much for the video. I did put her into her adult exclise as she is over 3 inches. She is in the 12x8x8. .
Astonishingly beautiful interesting spiders. Thank you.
Very fine info and photos.
The spider is not trying to go where you are when you flip the enclosure around they try to always go up having more mobility in webs then on the ground.
Love my black widow she's a sweet heart handle her regularly have yet to been bit knock on wood
My first ever T was a G. Rosea aswell! She's 15 years old now, and still going strong!
Each is so beautiful and has definite color besides "brown". Always great and well thought out videos with good information. Thank you!
Hi Tom, if you are looking for more Pterinochilus species, Tarantula Canada (Montreal; hopefully can import without a lot of hassle) has 4 different species, including 2 Dark Color Forms - "Mikumi" and "Kigoma".
Absolutely brilliant Tom, very informative and enjoyable, they are a fantastic species of spider 🕷, and definitely worth having, thanks Tom for another wonderful video.
My t. blondi is now arround 20 cm or 7.8 inches (I got it some time ago, close to your first theraphosa podcast as a not that tiny sling haha) and all your advices from all these years have been a blesing. I still make it rain, provide dep substrate, good vent and even though i dont see her too offen because mine is a skittish lady, this is a GORGEOUS animal. If someone is thinking about getting one, do it they dont disapoint. (and they eat like boas, wich makes them even amazing) Again, thank you for all the awesome advice as always Tom, wish you and your loved ones the very very best. Cheers from Spain.
Those new enclosures you used are awesome. Do you know if I can get them shipped to the UK?
Mine just scared the s*** out of me as I was trying to tidy up it's enclosure he ran up the back and out, luckily he stopped on the back so I could catch him in a cricket tub I tidied up his enclosure put him back in then he tried to flee again. 😅
If the heteropoda maxima is rhe largest spider due to leg span, wouldn't that make the Apophysis the largest out of the three Theraphosa due to longest leg span? 😅
There have been many debates over which spider is the largest. Unfortunately, a photo of a molt (that, as far as anyone knows, could have been doctored) that only a handful of people have seen does not constitute proof. Someone would have to have an adult that large and have it measured by someone of authority.
After watching this video, I finally feel that I know without a doubt that my first ever T is in premolt. This video is super informative and clear.
Can't wait to see these beauty's in person.....and hello Tom it's Sam lol
I was going between one of these or a pamphobeteus machala in the end i chose one of these because it appears that the pretty colours appear in the males and females whereas the female pampho is brown. I want a purple spider!
So funny! I still remember them being sold as Leblondi in the 90s. Anyways, great video!
What is this enclosure?! I love it! Maybe I missed it in the video, but I’ve gotta get my hands on a few of these
Awesome spiders Tom. Love them. Love the pink colours on the knees of the last one. Anything but a big brown spider as far as I am concerned.
Was thinking of an idea the other day of somehow constructing a liquified feeder pulp like a cricket smoothie for tarantulas to drink after a moult rather than sucking the juice out of their moults for more of a chance to get an intact moult and also benefit the spider with nutrients which i think would help them harden up after a moult
Hi Tom! Awesome video as always! Your blondi is stunning! Unfortunately I got full haired in the face, eyes, and throat by my apophysis male and those three days of hell were enough for me to not keep Theraphosa. It's mass rehousing weekend and I knocked out 5 today. Everyone was very well behaved, thankfully. Also, my Pseudhapalopus sp. Columbia moulted and has its adult colours- absolutely stunning! Definitely going to have to get that one in a new enclosure as well. Also, funny little story for you. I had a fake plastic skull in with my Queen for ages for decoration. She recently decided she didn't like it and threw it in her water dish. It made me think about the ping pong balls since it was the same general size, shape, and material, and she just said "absolutely not." Hope all is well with you! Keep up the awesome work! - Charlotte
Hey Tom. Hope you and the family are all good. I loved this video and I now have two stirmi slings and I’m amazed at how lanky they are lol and yes, super fast at the slightest touch of the enclosure. It’s great to see you’re using the reptile growth enclosures because they are awesome and very well priced for what they are and I’m pleased to say we can actually get these easily in the uk so they’re my go to enclosure now. I’m a great fan of the BBS ( Big Brown Spider) and my stirmi are top of my list now together with all my LPs and curly hairs. All the best bud.
Where can I get that cage
Great video as always
Great video as always!...love the T-shirt 😁....I have so many of those enclosures now! 😉 they're great👌
Great video tom.ii will admit I've struggled keeping them alive.rhe t blondi I had from a sling got to 8' in 6 months probably down to me which in the end she had impaction.and I lost her.we have to learn from our mistakes.hopefully at some point I will get one and try again.
